Walter Leigh founding member of
The Augusta Fire Company
Following a December 29, 1795 Act of the Georgia Legislature,
The Augusta Fire Company was constituted on June 20, 1796.
Fifty men from Augusta agreed to adopt, "the Rules for the
regulation of said Company." Thomas Cumming and Walter
Leigh were the first two of fifty names to appear on the list as
members of the newly formed company. The full list of fifty
names is a Who's Who from Augusta's rich history including:
Isaac Herbert, Joseph Hutchinson, William Longstreet, Benjamin
Sims, Richard Tubman et al.

The Augusta Fire Company
The Augusta Chronicle announced Friday, March 5, 1813, "The
Augusta Fire Company
ARE ordered to assemble at the
city-hotel on Saturday the 6th inst. at 3 o'clock P.M. of which
they will be reminded by the ringing of the bell."
